Inviting Water of Deities

Millennium River Basin Culture—River Deities and Allied Realms

This 20-minute immersive performance theater takes “the alliance of river deities” as its theme, presenting the six major river basins of Tainan as floating islands in the air. The six river basins, each with its unique characteristics such as source height, basin area, and length, are divided into aerial islands of varying sizes and features, interpreting the six rivers in an anatomical manner. Each river basin island is further visually embodied in “the residence of the river deity,” with six river deities guarding their respective basins in different forms. Each deity manifests in a distinct image, showcasing the interdependent relationship between the rivers, the land, and the living beings. Rivers are both the nurturing mothers of the land and its creatures, as well as the raging perpetrators of violence, and the abused victims of pollution. The performance creates an immensely magnified visual impact, with the waterfalls cascading down from the islands converging and connecting to Fucheng (Tainan) through the “Fu An Keng Creek” and “Deqing Creek,” the two creeks as close to the people as the Earth God or the Kitchen God, forming the image of “the protection of all deities” over the thousand-year-old land.
