SISTERS Ⅲ

The CHÍ-MOĀI series originated from the 2019 international exchange project “San Jose-Tainan Dialogue between Contemporary Art and Technology.” Two works have been completed: The Waste and The Darkness, which unfolds the relationship between the evolution of human consciousness and sound based on the soundscape of the water supply and sewage treatment facilities in the Southern Taiwan Science Park corresponding to the patterns of prehistoric relics unearthed in the park area; The Related, Us takes San Jose, California, USA (one of Tainan’s sister cities) as the main setting, also exploring the water soundscape to reveal the emotional connections and relationships behind industrial technology, urban history, and the flow of civilization.
This third part, from “listening to” and “observing” the wastewater treatment plants in the two cities, leads to the known involving technology, environment, humanities and history, expanding the awareness of time and space. In addition to the field recordings of the water supply facilities, wastewater treatment plants in the Tainan Science Park of the Southern Taiwan Science Park, the San Jose-Santa Clara Regional Wastewater Facility, and the Silicon Valley Advanced Water Purification Center, as well as the natural environments of the two places, the work also includes the Resource Recycling Center that treats wastewater sludge in the STSP. Starting from the material (sludge) left at the end of the water treatment, it reveals the interconnected energy, physics, power, and life reality in the water purification process and their mutual interpretation. The images, through microflora and material phenomena, interweave the consciousness and questions awakened from the auditory perspective. Is the “world” and “universal” cognition created by the evolution of human consciousness inverted and opposite? All sound waves and vibrations transmit messages and memories of the universe, waiting for humans to remember.

    Cia Himiân Lí

Sound and transmedia artist. She is interested in flowing energy under the surface of the visual world. Using “sound” as the main sensory awareness and agency, exploring the reflective relationships and forces between environment, memory (history), and life. She often juxtaposes sound and multimedia elements to present the intertwined time textures and dimensions in the interactive relationship between humans and the environment. From a microscopic perspective, she attempts to deconstruct and reveal the connections and disconnections of different levels of consciousness. She is also the host of the “INCORRECT” Lab and lives in Tainan.
