The Tide Sounds by Seaport

The concept of foley, originating from the invention of sound films, is an engineering process of creating sounds using various materials and objects. This artwork attempts to explore the existence of “tide sounds” through foley techniques, contemplating the real and fictional states of tide sounds placed in a space. By simulating the sound of tides, it reconnects us to the natural ocean tides that surround us daily. Hovering between real and fictional auditory experiences, it’s like traveling through abstract images of ocean memories, where reality and illusion continually overlap and reconstruct our imagination of the sea. Crossing the ocean can be seen as a collective memory of the inhabitants of Taiwan, and this ocean is the foundation that shapes the shared destiny of Taiwan. The hidden marine genes of the people frequently call for exploration of this heritage. Hence, the work uses the sounds of tides and boats as metaphors for a past history of seaports/harbors, as if using sound as a medium to traverse time, investigating the island’s once-remaining maritime history.
